Scott manufactures over 100 models of graphite
and fiberglass fly rods, each for a specific fishing application. In this catalog, we will explain what each Scott fly rod line does best. We
will also describe the design features which make every Scott rod a high performance fly fishing tool.
We incorporate three design features which make every Scott fly rod high performance: sophisticated materials layup and tapers, the Scott
Internal Ferrule, and Scott's unique Flex Rating process. Also, every Scott fly rod is backed by our Unconditional Lifetime Warranty.
MATERIALS LAYUP
AND TAPERS
Rod Designer Jim Bartschi uses many combinations of graphite, fiberglass, and scrim materials in building fly rods. We refer to this
combination as the "layup," and herein lies a critical step in the design process. Some fly rod companies build entire rod lines out
of one material or taper set. We conceive of a fly rod, then choose materials and tapers to best achieve our design goals. At Scott, a variety
of layups are used, in combination with many different taper designs to achieve specific performance features for each fly rod.
THE SCOTT INTERNAL FERRULE
The Scott Internal Ferrule has been a trademark of our fly rods for over twenty years. The internal ferrule takes longer to build and requires
more precise fitting techniques than the more common "tip over butt ferrule," but the advantages are significant. The internal ferrule
has less mass than a tip over butt ferrule, and flexes with the rest of the rod to avoid "flat spots" or "hinging" when the
rod is in use. Flex a rod with internal ferrules and one with tip over butt ferrules. Look at the difference in the way the rods flex through
the ferrules.
Using an internal ferrule to join rod sections provides a continuous
taper from the butt of the rod to the tip. Sight down a rod with internal ferrules and one with tip over butt ferrules. Look at the difference
in tapers. The result of this continuous taper is efficient energy transfer through the rod. The internal ferrule allows energy to flow through
the rod rather than disperse at each joint.
While the advantages of the internal ferrule can easily be felt in two piece fly rods, the Scott ferrule makes us the unchallenged leader in
multipiece fly rods.
FLEX RATING
Another feature underlying the exceptional performance of every Scott rod is our careful attention to matching rod sections. Scott is the only
company with complete control over varying fiber content in graphite and fiberglass materials. Flex Rating is our unique process of calibrating
and matching sections based on their relative weight and stiffness. Each blank section is tested, then tips and butts of corresponding
deflection strength are chosen for precise balance. Flex Rating plays a major role in the consistent quality and superb balance of our
handcrafted fly rods.
Materials layup and tapers, the Scott Internal Ferrule, and Flex Rating are the building blocks of our high performance fly rods.
UNCONDITIONAL LIFETIME WARRANTY
The world's finest fly rods are backed by the industry's best warranty. Our Unconditional Lifetime Warranty covers every Scott fly rod and
blank against breakage of any kind.
In the event of breakage, our unique Flex Rating system allows us to choose replacement parts which perfectly match the originals. This means
that your fly rod will feel the same through the years, regardless of whether you've had a section replaced. Many rod makers offer a lifetime
warranty, but only Scott can promise this level of quality in repair service.
