Captain Robl guides fly rodders for striped bass, blue fish, false albacore, bonito and Spanish mackerel from Smithtown Bay on Long Island. Just one hour from New York City, this prolific inshore fishery offers some of the most diverse and exciting saltwater fly fishing anywhere.

The season begins in April, when hungry stripers arrive after a long winter in their natal waters. In the spring and early summer, Bob primarily fishes the diverse waters of Smithtown Bay. This vast saltwater ecosystem features two major river estuaries and extensive rocky shorelines. Anglers enjoy unparalleled sight fishing opportunities on rich flats that are often less than two feet deep. By mid-May, bluefish teem in Smithtown Bay, adding variety to already spectacular fishing.

In June, July and August, huge stripers cruise the shoreline, taking advantage of moon cycles and night tides to feed on abundant baitfish. One of nature's surprises, the "cinderworm swarm," provides electric fly fishing action during this period. Robl takes advantage of the peak fishing periods by offering night fishing charters for opportunistic fly anglers.

In September, October and November, Captain Robl fishes Long Island's North Fork and East End. Migrating fish intercept bait pods and provide late season fireworks that can last all the way through Thanksgiving.

Robl's favorite rods are the STS 908/3 for estuary fishing, "schoolies", and Spanish mackerel, and the STS 9010/3 for bruiser stripers, bluefish, false albacore and bonito.
