HP 8814/3

This rod and the HP 7815/3 differ from the lighter line weight Heliplys in that they are constructed from a composite of fiberglass and graphite rather than pure graphite. Fiberglass is used to add durability for bluewater fishing. This is a virtually unlimited fly rod, capable of lifting tuna from deep water and stopping the rumbling runs of large sailfish and even marlin. Heliply Bluewater rods are superior to those of other manufacturers because they are much easier to cast. The tips, composed largely of fiberglass, are nice and forgiving. If you've ever cast a 14 or 15-weight fly rod, you know that most of them weigh about 5 pounds and cast like a length of rebar. You'll be surprised by how easily the HP 8814/3 casts a 14-weight fly line and chicken-sized fly.

HP 8812/3 and HP 8814/3: These are my choices for large gamefish in blue water fishing, where the fish will sound and most of the fight consists of heavy lifting, with half the fly rod under water. Here you need "mucho backbone" and in these situation s I prefer the shorter HPs, not for accuracy this time, but for the superior leverage that this design offers. (Mainly for marlin, larger tunas, large amberjack, etc.) On a serious blue water trip, I fish with a t least two of these big rods fully rigged, often more.
