The undisputed Dean of the Green, Emmett Heath has established himself as the leading specialist on this magnificent resource. Utah's Green River is among the richest trout streams in North America, offering prolific hatches from early spring through late fall each year. Thirty miles of trout water flow through a geographic transition zone that begins between the sheer canyon walls of the Flaming Gorge and emerges in the high desert of northern Utah. The fishing is equally diverse. In a single day the angler may catch fish on single midge dry flies, size 4 Wooly Buggers, and a host of nymph patterns. Many guides fish the Green successfully, but only one has lived in Dutch John for over seventeen years, rowing and wading the canyon water over 200 days each year.
Emmett has developed highly refined preferences for tackle and technique over the years. He fishes traditional Scott PowRPly rods with midges, baetis and other small dries. The faster action Scott Tactical Series are his favorite for larger dries, including the famous Cicadas in early summer, and for most of his nymph fishing. Emmett also fishes lots of streamers, and interestingly enough prefers Heliply saltwater rods for pounding the banks with Woolhead Sculpins from the moving boat. Emmett swears by the HP 887/3, and even the HP 888/3 under serious conditions.
